691 Arrests in Crete during August 2011

As an exercise in improving my Greek I today spent a while translating an article in a local newspaper entitled "691 Συλλήψεις Στην Κρητη τον Αύγουστο" (691 arrests in Crete during August). The article includes some interesting statistics and shows clearly the different emphasis of police work here in Crete compared to countries such as the UK. Summary of Arrests: (Not all information available)-
  • 83 for Drugs
  • 9 for Robbery
  • 2 for Murder
  • 69 for Burglary
  • 32 for Firearm Offences
  • 57 for Non-Compliance with Judgement Orders
  • 253 for violation of ‘Alien' Laws
  • 7 for Misc Non-Specified Violations
  • 1 for Environmental Health Regulation Offence
  • 5 for Copyright Infringements
  • 28 for Begging
  • 4 for Opening Sanitary Facilities (!!?)
  • 26 for Various Offences following Indictment
  • 5 for Police Infringements
  • 7 for Cattle Rustling
  • 2 for Disturbing Security Systems
  • 13 for Solicitation
  • 2 for Domestic Violence
  • 10 for other unspecified offences

The Crete News Review is my electronic newspaper generated from Tweets about Crete as published on Twitter.

Whimpering Lion

The Lion only whimpered. Downloaded the New Apple operating system an hour ago. The differences over the old system underwhelmed me…. Perhaps the improvements only show with continued use. I notice that the video on this page now appears in a random place on the screen - I will have to investigate that later.

The Lion is about to roar.

I use Macs and have been used to using Macromedia products and in particular Dreamweaver to produce websites. However once Adobe took over Macromedia their products priced me out of the market and I now use Rapidweaver 5 for this web site. I also have Sandvox but ‘I just do not get it' and so it sits there unused!

With the forthcoming release of Lion I will be waving goodbye to Dreamweaver 8, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office for ever as the versions I have will no longer work. Lion apparently does not support Rosetta which is needed to make these older applications function under OS X.
Times move on and both Adobe & Microsoft software prices continue to rise faster than my pension.

Does anyone one want to purchase a whole shelfful of obsolete software manuals (Does anyone even remember when software came with printed manuals?)

My Personal Blog

I regularly Tweet, as ‘@DaveInCrete’ and often publish photographs on Twitter as I travel around the beautiful island of Crete.

The video should have been shot in Greece (I think it is Spanish) - it accurately reflects the way many public services treat their customers in Greece. It would be funny if it wasn’t so true...
